To appropriately mix air fuel mixture made to flow in from a combustion chamber to an ignition chamber via communication holes with exhaust gas remaining within the ignition chamber; and to increase the flow speed of combustion flame jetted from the ignition chamber to the combustion chamber via the communication holes.
The engine 1 includes a plug body 11 with a cover in which a plug cover 13 covering an ignition point 22 and forming the ignition chamber 14 is provided in a plug body 11a. The plug body 11 with the cover is fitted to a cylinder head 6, and the communication holes 15 communicating the ignition chamber 14 with the combustion chamber 3 facing a piston 2 are provided in the plug cover 11b. The engine includes a projecting/retracting posture switching means 10 for switching the tip of the plug body 11 with the cover between a projecting posture projecting to the inner side of the combustion chamber 3 and a retracting posture in which the projecting amount is reduced from the position within the combustion chamber 3 in the projecting posture.
