To solve a problem in a conventional engine starter wherein a rope carelessly released before the start of an engine, is pulled at a stroke by the force accumulated in first and second main springs to cause the danger of a handle at the tip of the rope colliding against an engine starter case.

This engine starter device is composed of a rope reel turned by the rope; the recoiling first main spring and engine starting second main spring provided at the rope reel and wound by turning of the rope reel; an engine starting pulley driven by the second main spring; and a braking means for suppressing the rotation of the rope reel when the rotating speed of the rope reel in recoiling becomes a predetermined value or more. The braking means includes an element moved by centrifugal force.
