To prevent an impact stress from being applied to a torque transmitting system at the time of starting of an engine.
In an engine starting device having a starting motor 30 formed by a DC shunt motor 3b in which an armature winding 32b and field winding 31b are connected with each other in parallel, an engine starting switch 5a connected between the starting motor 30 and a battery 4, a power transmitting mechanism 2a in which an output shaft of the starting motor 30 is connected with an engine output shaft 23 at the time of power feed to the armature winding 32b and its connection is removed at the time of no power feed to the armature winding 32b, and a control means for controlling field winding current fed to an engine starting switch 5a and the field winding 31b, the control means generates torque in the starting motor 30 by feeding the field winding current to the field winding 31b after the output shaft of the starting motor 30 is connected with the engine output shaft by the power transmitting mechanism 2a in response to power feed to the armature winding 32b, and controls the field winding current so that the torque reaches to the designated torque-time characteristic.
