To provide an engine starting system for starting an engine of an automobile and having excellent long-term reliability by solving a problem of a large burden applied to a battery and shortening a service life.
The engine starting system is constituted to have the battery charged by a generator and a capacitor bank 4, wherein the capacitor bank 4 is mainly charged by braking energy and the battery 3 is connected in series to the capacitor bank 4 and drives a starter motor 5. An electricity storage amount of the capacitor bank 4 when a vehicle is at rest is set at 24% to 48% of an electricity storage amount when the vehicle is in operation. By this arrangement, the burden on the capacitor bank 4 is reduced, the battery 3 is also prevented from the large burden because the electricity storage amount is not zero and the service life is increased by the reduction of the burdens on the capacitor bank 4 and on the battery 3.
