To improve probability of ignition after the engine restarts of air-fuel mixture put into a cylinder stopping in a compression stroke when an engine stops.
In this hybrid automobile, the engine is stopped when engine stop conditions are satisfied, but air-fuel mixture is put in the cylinder stopping in the compression stroke when the engine stops. When engine restart conditions after that are satisfied, cranking is performed by driving a motor, and the cylinder in the compression stroke is ignited when the cylinder in the compression stroke reaches ignition timing (S210 to S230). When air-fuel mixture in the cylinder in the compression stroke causes misfire, ignition is repeated until air-fuel mixture in the cylinder is ignited during a period when a piston of the cylinder reaches an ignition lag limit angle. Multiple ignition is repeated when air-fuel mixture in the cylinder is not ignited even if the piston in the cylinder exceeds the ignition retard limit angle (S240 to S280).
