The engine includes a cylinder block having a cylinder train 23, a crank shaft 17, a first balancer shaft 53 and a second balancer shaft 54 journaled to portions on the side of the cylinder train beyond the crank shaft of the cylinder block, an oil pump 71 having a driving shaft 73, a crank gear 28 provided at one end of the crank shaft, a first balancer shaft gear 64 provided at one end of the first balancer shaft, a second balance shaft gear 67 provided at one end of the second balancer shaft, an oil pump gear 74 provided on the driving shaft of the oil pump, and a first idler gear 84 and a second idler gear 86 for connecting the crank gear to the first balancer shaft gear and for connecting the first gear to the second balancer shaft gear, respectively. The oil pump gear is connected to the downstream side of the first balancer shaft gear where the crank gear is located on the upstream side.
