PURPOSE: To provide an engraving apparatus which can accurately control a position with a simple structure and has excellent response of a driver.

CONSTITUTION: The engraving apparatus comprises a holder 14 for holding an engraving pen 12, and a head 16 for holding the holder 14 axially movably of the pen 12 via a spring 19. The apparatus also comprises a nut 18 fixed to the head 16, a ball screw 20 engaged with the nut 18, and a servo motor 22 for rotating the screw 20, wherein the head 16 is controllable to be driven in the same direction as the axial direction of the pen 12. The motor 22 is controlled by a signal from a position detecting member 21 to position the height of the head 16.
