PURPOSE: To form a pattern on the surface of an article made of a metal by applying a soft coat consisting of a base metal to the surface of an article of a metal and cutting off part of the coat using a numeral value-controlled machine tool.
CONSTITUTION: A basic figure to be drawn on a grip P1 is drawn and is read, using an image sensor such as an image scanner, into a control device 25. Further, data on the profile of the grip P1 is entered into the control device 25, and a figure which is entered is converted to a shape along the outer surface of the grip P1 inside the control device 25. In addition, the movement amount of a cutter 20 in an axial direction at each coordinate position of the pattern of the grip P1 which is entered is calculated. This calculated value is arithmetically processed in relation to 1/7 of the outer periphery of the grip P1 and this processed value is recorded in memory. After holding the grip P1 at a specified position by a drive device C3, an orbital trace preserved in the control device 25 is pursued with the concurrent action to rotate the cutter 20. If the processing of a 1/6 pattern is completed, the grip P1 is rotated by 1/7 turn to repeat the processing and thus it is possible to form a pattern on the surface of the grip P1.
