Abstract:
To provide a methylcellulose having greater gel strength than methylcelluloses of the prior art.
The methylcellulose is produced by methylating cellulose pulp in two separate stages. The methylcellulose has a methoxyl substitution of about 25 to about 35 weight percent based upon the weight of the methylcellulose and a gel strength greater than about 223 x (v0.273), wherein v represents the viscosity of the methylcellulose at 20°C in a 2% aqueous solution.
