To provide a method for proliferating eukaryotic microorganisms which produce lipids, in particular lipids containing polyenoic fatty acids, and a method for producing lipids of the eukaryotic microorganisms.
There are provided the method for proliferating eukaryotic microorganisms producing at least about 20% of eukaryotic microorganism biomass as lipids, the method for producing lipids of the same, wherein the lipids preferably contain one or more polyenoic fatty acids, and a carbon source, preferably a non-alcohol carbon source, and restricted nutrient sources are added to a fermentation medium containing the eukaryotic microorganisms. The carbon source and the restricted nutrients are preferably added at a sufficient rate to increase biomass density of the fermentation medium at least at about 100 g/L.
