PURPOSE: To provide a method for the enzymatic assay for carbon dioxide for the purpose of expanding the clinical chemistry field.
CONSTITUTION: This method comprises the two processes described below: (a) mixing, within the range of pH 6.0 to 8.5, a given amount of a body fluid with excess amounts of phosphoenolpyruvate, malate dehydrogenase, 0.2-1.5 mmol/L of reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, 0.5-300 U/L of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, 0.1-10.0 mmol/L of each of the cofactors magnesium and manganese ions, and 0.1-10 mmol/L of a sulfhydryl agent, and (b) spectrophotometrically measuring the change in the concentration of the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in the mixture at a substantially constant temperature and within the range of pH 6.0 to 8.5.
