PURPOSE: To obtain a Streptococcus pneumoniae surface protein A (PspA) fragment containing an epitope inducing a protective action, having cross-reactivity, and capable of being inserted into vaccines against diseases caused by the infection of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
CONSTITUTION: The surface protein A (PspA) of Streptococcus pneumoniae Rx1 strain contains an epitope inducing a protective action. One region of the protein comprises a 68 amino acid sequence and extends from the amino acid residue 192 of the Rx1 PspA strain to 260. The other terminal of the protein comprises a C-terminated amino acid sequence and extends from the amino acid residue 192 to 588. The third region extends from the amino acid residue 293 of the Rx1 PspA strain to 588. A pair of oligonucleotide primers or probes can be used for the polymerase chain reaction amplification of pneumococcal DNA for the production of the pneumococcal DNA or for the detection of the pneumococcal DNA. PspA having a perfect length also has an interference effect against various kinds of pneumococci.
