Abstract:
The co-oxidation of an olefin and a beta-substituted saturated aliphatic aldehyde of the formula R<1>-CR<2>-CR<3>- CHO, wherein Z<1> and R<4>, R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups and Z is -OR<5>, -CN or -OC(O)R<5>, R<5> being an alkyl aryl or cycloalkyl group to the corresponding epoxide and beta- substituted saturated aliphatic acid is effected by contacting the olefin and aldehyde with molecular oxygen in a fluid medium, preferably in the presence of a liquid reaction medium comprising a saturated aliphatic nitrile.
