Abstract:

To provide coating powders which enable to provide an improved filiform corrosion resistance in a clear or colored clear coating.

The present provides coating powders that enable to provide an improved filiform corrosion resistance in a clear or colored clear coating, the coating powders comprising an epoxy functional acrylic copolymer component; one or more of crosslinking agents for thermosetting acrylic copolymers; and, as an optional component, one or more of adhesion promoters, for example, an epoxy resin, a light stabilizing agent, an ultraviolet (UV) absorber, and/or a hydrophobic submicron particles, in which the epoxy functional copolymer component has a Tg of from 40 decrees C to 90 degrees C, and is selected from the copolymers or copolymer mixtures that comprise, based on the total weight of copolymerized monomers in the epoxy functional acrylic copolymer component, (i) from 10 to 40 wt.% of one or more epoxy functional unsaturated monomers, e.g. glycidyl (meth)acrylate; (ii) from 2.0 wt.% to 13 wt.%, preferably 12 wt.% or less, or, more preferably, 6.0 wt.% or less of one or more hydrophobic acrylic monomers which have a mass solubility in water of 3.5 g/L or less and would itself form a homopolymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 50 degrees C to 175 degrees C, e.g. a bicycloalkyl (meth)acrylate, and (iii) the balance of one or more nonionic comonomers that are not hydrophobic acrylic monomers (ii), e.g. methyl methacrylate.
