PURPOSE: To obtain an epoxy resin having a β-ketoester group in the molecular structure and being lowly viscous and excellent in compatibility, corrosion resistance, etc., by reacting a hydroxy epoxy resin with a ?-ketoester of a t- alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxy epoxy resin (e.g. bisphenol-A-derived epoxy resin) is reacted with a β-ketoester of a t-alcohol (e.g. methyl acetoacetate) at 80-200°C to obtain an epoxy resin having a β-ketoester group in the molecular skeleton, having an epoxy equivalent of 400-40000 g/eq. and represented by for example the formula (wherein R1 is a 1-10 C hydrocarbon group; R2 is H or a 1-10 Chydrocarbon group; Y is H, chloro or a 1-6 C hydrocarbon group; A is a single covalent bond, a 1-6 C hydrocarbon, O, S or the like; (l) is 1-4; and m+n=1-45). This resin is desirable as a molding material for laminates, an electrical insulation material or the like.
