PURPOSE: To obtain an epoxy resin having an excellent heat distortion resistance by reacting an epoxyalkyl halide compound and a specified melamine derivative, and further to obtain a vinylester resin having an extraordinarily high heat distortion resistance and toughness by reacting the epoxy resin with an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: An epoxy resin is prepared by reacting (A) an epoxyalkyl halide compound and (B) a melamine derivative containing aromatic hydroxyl groups. As the melamine derivative (B), compounds shown by formula I (R is H, an alkyl group or an aryl group; R1 is H, an alkyl group, an aryl group or a condensed aromatic ring) are preferable. Also, a vinylester resin is formed by compounding (I) 25 to 100 wt.% vinylester obtained by reacting the above epoxy resin with an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, (II) 0 to 75 wt.% unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the component (I), and conventional additives.
