NEW MATERIAL:Esters of formula I (R, R' are straight chain alkyl of 1W8 carbon atoms).
EXAMPLE: 2-Chloro-4-n-propoxy-(2'-cyano-4'-n-hexylphenyl)benzoate.
USE: An additive for liquid crystal compositions which are useful in the reduction of electric power consumption. They have negative dielectric anisotropy of absolutely high value and the addition to another liquid crystal composition in a small amount lowers the dielectric anisotropy in low and high frequency zones. When said composition is used in electrooptic display elements, the driving voltage can be lowered in the posi-type guest-host system and two-wave driving system.
PREPARATION: The reaction of a compound of formula II with an alkyl bromide affords a compound of formula III, which is made to react with thionyl chloride to form a compound of formula IV. Finally, the compound of formula IV is made to react with a compound of formula VI, which is prepared in accordance with reaction equations, to give the title compound of formula I.
