To obtain the subject catalyst capable of producing in high selectivity an α-olefin useful as a raw material for e.g. plasticizers from ethylene without using aluminoxane and also without increased byproduct polyethylene yield by including a specific chromium complex and an alkylmetallic compound.
This catalyst is obtained by including (A) a chromium complex with a multidentate ligand having a bridge-type or a cyclic structure coordinated on the metallic chromium with a group 15 (except nitrogen) or group 16 element contained in the multidentate ligand and (B) an alkylmetallic compound, wherein, in the component A, it is preferable that the multidentate ligand having the bridge-type structure is a compound of the formula [(g) and (h) are each 0-6; D1 is a (substituted) bivalent hydrocarbon; L1 and L2 are each a substituent containing a group 15 or 16 element], being a facially coordinated chromium complex.
