Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain an ethylene compound useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal element, having excellent switching characteristics, high-speed responsiveness, high contrast, effective for reducing temperature dependence of response speed.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is shown by the formula R1-A1-R2 [R1 and R2 are each H, a halogen, CN, a 1-20C alkyl, etc.; A1 is A2, A2-X1-A3, A2-X1-A3- X2-A4 (A2, A3 and A4 are each 1,4-phenylene, pyridine-2,4-diyl, etc.; X1 and X2 are each a single bond, COO, CH2O, CH=CH, etc.)] such as 1-(5- decyloxypyrimidin-2-yl)-4-(4-phenyl-1-butynyl)benzene. A liquid crystal composition containing 1-80wt.% of at least one ethynylene compound is prepared and ferroelectricity shown by the liquid crystal composition is utilized to operate a display device. A liquid crystal element is used as a surface element and is combined with a light source, a driving circuit, etc., to provide an excellent display device.
