To provide a method for constructing a large cross-section tunnel with high rigidity and good workability, by employing an excavator having a simple machine structure.
The excavator 10 employed in the method has an almost rectangular cross section and upper and lower surfaces which are formed like arcuate convex surfaces, and carries out excavation in the ground so as to form a cross section conforming to an outer shell 20 thereof, followed by setting propelling pipes 50, to thereby construct cells 2a to 2j. Then, the cells 2a to 2j are adjacently arranged in the horizontal and vertical directions to form a cell group. Further, a form 70 is set in the cell group in a manner conforming to an internal cross-sectional profile of the large cross-section tunnel 1, and concrete 72 is poured in the form 70, followed by removing the form 70 and the cells inside the form, to thereby construct the large cross-section tunnel 1.
