PURPOSE: To provide an exhaust device provided with a diffuser of double wall type and capable of improving exhaust emission conversion performance and fuel consumption.
CONSTITUTION: This exhaust device has a catalytic converter 16 provided with a substrate 22 having a catalyst composition carried thereon. The substrate is carried in a housing 24 positioned along its outer surfaces. A diffuser 28 of two-wall type has an outer wall 30 connected to the housing 24 and an exhaust pipe 14 and an inner wall 36 which is branched from the outer wall 30 and defines a diffuser division having a smaller inlet cross section area than an outlet cross section area. The inner wall 36 also defines an abrupt expansion diameter section 40 in the vicinity of the substrate and has a free floating end part 42 which is not connected to the substrate and the housing rigidly. Consequently, the inner wall an inflate and shrink freely even if it is subjected to heat during engine operation. A space 44 between the inner wall and the outer wall provides a thermally insulating air barrier to limit temperature and heat acting on the outer wall.
