To improve the exhaust by eliminating the heavy HC to be discharged when cold-starting a diesel engine 1 to accelerate early activation of the NOx trap catalyst 5 arranged in an exhaust passage 3.
Heavy HC trap catalyst 4 is arranged in the upstream of the NOx trap catalyst 5 arranged in the exhaust passage 3 of the diesel engine 1 to trap the heavy HC, which hinders early activation of the NOx trap catalyst 5, in the exhaust gas to be discharged when cold-starting the engine 1.
