To provide an exhaust emission control device of a diesel engine for excellently purifying exhaust gas exhausted from the diesel engine over a long period by minimizing the deterioration in fuel economy.
A NOx adsorption-reduction type catalyst and a diesel particulate filter for oxidizing and removing particulate matter in exhaust gas, are provided in order from the upstream side of an exhaust flow in an exhaust gas flow passage of the diesel engine. The above arrangement allows the elevation of the temperature of a catalyst with ease and the precise control of the temperature and an atmosphere therein, resulting in the achievement of satisfactory NOx reduction performance, and the employment of the NOx adsorption-reduction type catalyst allows the enhancement of a reduction speed of NO2 captured, which shortens the time to keep a stoichiometric-rich atmosphere to a time of several seconds to several minutes.
