Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To regenerate NOx catalysts without decreasing an excess air percentage.
SOLUTION: A combustion temperature lowering means 71 lowers engine combustion temperature depending upon engine operating conditions, and during such an operation of the combustion temperature lowering means 71, ignition lag time increasing means 72 extends a ignition lag time substantially, so that the heat generation pattern is in a single-stage combustion mode. A temperature- sensitive NOx catalyst 73 adsorbs NOx in exhaust, when the heat generation pattern is in the single-stage combustion mode as well as the exhaust temperature is not more than a preset value, and regenerates when the exhaust temperature exceeds the preset value. A determining means 74 determines whether has arrived, when the temperature-sensitive NOx catalyst 73 is to regenerate. An affirmative determination result signals combustion switching means 75 to change the combustion into a diffuse-combustion-basis mode.
