To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine for effectively reducing fuel consumption for desorption of soluble organic component adsorbed by an exhaust system member.
An electronic control unit 28 adds unburned fuel to an exhaust system for burning and removing SOF adhering on the exhaust system member of a diesel engine under a condition where the engine is in idling operation during or after vehicle deceleration during which exhaust gas flow rate of the diesel engine reduces. Consequently, a quantity of unburned fuel to be added to exhaust gas required for raising temperature of the exhaust gas and a catalyst to temperature at which SOF is burned is reduced, and fuel consumption for removing SOF is effectively reduced.
