To surely inhibit the emission of HC to an atmosphere in an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine.
The exhaust emission control device for the internal combustion engine includes an adsorbent 42 having a function adsorbing HC, a bypass passage 44 bypassing the adsorbent 42, a high temperature exhaust gas passage 30, a low temperature exhaust gas passage 32, a changeover valve 46, and a back wash catalyst 34. The changeover valve 46 is changed over between an adsorbent sealing state making exhaust gas flow to a bypass passage 44 from a high temperature exhaust gas passage 30 and a low temperature exhaust gas passage 32 by sealing an inlet 52 to the adsorbent 42 and a bypass passage seal state making the exhaust gas flow to the adsorbent 42 from the high temperature exhaust passage 30 and a low temperature exhaust gas passage 32 by sealing an inlet 54 to the bypass passage 44. When the changeover valve 46 is in the adsorbent sealing state, exhaust gas from the low temperature exhaust gas passage 32 flows a position near the inlet 52 to the adsorbent 42 as compared with exhaust gas from the high temperature exhaust gas passage 30.
