Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly release NOX from a NOX absorbent.
SOLUTION: The NOX absorbent for absorbing NOX in the case of a lean air/fuel ratio is arranged in an engine exhaust passage and a NOX ammonia sensor 29 is arranged it the engine exhaust passage in the downstream of the NOX absorbent 23. An extra amount of reducing agent for the release of NOX is found from a change in concentration of ammonia detected by the NOX ammonia sensor 29 when a rich air/fuel ratio is established for the release of NOX from the NOX absorbent 23.
