PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine capable of further reliably and continuously burning the particulates trapped by a particulate filter and quickly raising the temperature of the particulate filter when it is required to increase the oxidizing/removing capability of particulates on the particulate filter.
SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control device is provided with the filter carrying an active oxygen releasing agent accelerating the oxidation of the particulates in the exhaust gas and capable of temporarily trapping the particulates in the exhaust gas, and an exhaust switching means switching a first flow feeding the exhaust gas from one side of the filter and a second flow feeding the exhaust gas from the other side of the filter in turn. The temperature of the exhaust gas flowing into the filter differs when the first flow is used and when the second flow is used. The exhaust emission control device is also provided with a control means selecting the side having the higher temperature of the exhaust gas flowing into the filter between the first flow and the second flow when the temperature of the filter is low and the oxidation of the particulates must be accelerated.
