Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To vary an intake air amount to a target excess air ratio with good response when combustion is transferred to rich combustion by reducing the intake air amount to regenerate an NOx trap catalyst.
SOLUTION: When the regenerating time of the NOx trap catalyst is determined, a throttle valve is closed, and the valve opening characteristics of intake/exhaust valves are switched to reduce the intake air amount, the capacity of an intake air collector part is reduced, or air in an intake air collector is sucked by a negative pressure source to positively lead circulated exhaust gas therein so as to lower the concentration of oxygen in the collector.
