Abstract:
To suppress emissions of harmful substances, prevent damage of a catalyst when a filter is regenerated and efficiently regenerate the filter in an exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: This invention relates to an exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine 1, 101, 201 that burns and removes particulate matters accumulated in a filter 42 by using oxidation heat generated by contact between an unburned air-fuel mixture including fuel and air and a catalyst 41 and thereby regenerates the filter 42. The exhaust emission control system includes: a regeneration instruction section 74h for instructing execution of filter regeneration control to a cylinder 11 in the case where a vehicle is in a deceleration state or the cylinder 11 is in a rest state and regeneration of the filter 42 is necessary; and a regeneration exhaust gas control section 75b for closing both of an intake valve 20a and an exhaust valve 21a in a filter regeneration mode and opening the exhaust valve 21a to send the unburned air-fuel mixture held for a predetermined period Q in a combustion chamber 14 that is not in a combustion state to the catalyst 41.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
