To provide an exhaust gas cleaning system wherein a low temperature ignitable catalyst composition or catalyst body developing cleaning capacity at a lower temperature in order to effectively clean HC in exhaust gas at the time of cold start and an adsorbent or adsorption body having HC adsorption capacity or an adsorption/catalyst body are combined, and an exhaust gas cleaning method using this system.
The exhaust gas cleaning system is constituted by arranging the low temperature ignitable catalyst composition, which includes a substance having electron donating action and/or nitrogen dioxide absorbing and discharging action and a noble metal and an adsorbent having hydrocarbon adsorption capacity or a catalyst body, wherein the low temperature ignitable catalyst composition which includes the substance having electron donating action and/or nitrogen dioxide absorbing and discharging action and the noble metal is supported on a carrier as a catalyst layer, and the adsorption body, wherein the adsorbent having hydrocarbon adsorbing capacity is supported on a carrier as an adsorption layer, in the exhaust body of an internal combustion engine. The exhaust gas cleaning method using this system is also disclosed.
