To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling warm-up of an exhaust cleaning catalyst, capable of preventing fuel from adhering to a piston crown surface and the like, and quickly activating (warming-up) the exhaust cleaning catalyst.
This apparatus is for controlling warm-up of the exhaust cleaning catalyst which cleans exhaust emission from an engine, and includes a distance change means which can change distance from the piston crown surface to a cylinder ceiling surface when the piston is located at a top dead center position, a determination means which determines whether warm-up of the exhaust purifying catalyst is required (S1, S2, S3), and an engine control means which increases the distance from the piston crown surface to the cylinder ceiling surface while the piston is at the top dead center position (S11, S21, S31) compared to the one at the completion of warm-of of the catalyst, sets a fuel injection timing IT of a fuel injection valve in between a latter half of a compression stroke and a first half of an expansion stroke (S12, S22, S32), and sets an ignition timing SA of an ignition plug in the expansion stroke after starting fuel injection (S13, S23, S33) when warm-up of the catalyst is required.
