PURPOSE: To remove harmful components from the exhaust gases highly efficiently by supporting a catalyst on a thin metal fitting or metal plate having a number of small holes in the thickness direction.
CONSTITUTION: An exhaust gas purification catalyst is formed by supporting a catalyst on a thin metal netting or metal plate 3 having a number of small holes of at least 30μm in diameter in the thickness direction. To purify the exhaust gases from an automobile (gasoline-engined vehicle) Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, SiO2-TiO2 and Al2O3-TiO2 are used as the carrier component and, as the catalytically active component, the platinum group element such as Ru, Rb, Pd and Pt or metal oxide such as Cr, Mn, Co and Ni are used. An exhaust gas purification catalytic converter fitted with the aforesaid catalyst has a catalyst filter 2 consisting of the stainless steel thin plate having a number of small holes and supporting the aforesaid catalyst thereon mounted in a cylindrical casing 1 with each end open in such a manner that the through hole of the catalyst filter is arranged parallel to the flow of the exhaust gases and it is used in the exhaust gases emission control system for a gasoline engine.
