Abstract:
PURPOSE:To convert noxious exhaust gas discharged from automobiles or industrial works into innoxious gas, by oxidizing the exhaust gas electro-chemically. CONSTITUTION:When exhaust gas containing carbon monoxide enters into a fuel cell 1 from an inlet 11, ions of carbon monoxide are formed by the catalytic action of a cathode 2 and dissolved into an electrolyte 6 of a molten carbonate or the like. Electrons produced through reaction at the cathode 2 are charged to a load 7, for instance, of a battery and then carried back to an anode 5. At the anode, a reaction shown by a formula in the drawing is caused by oxygen supplied from an inlet 12, ions of carbon monoxide supplied from electrolyte 6, and electrons carried back to the anode 5, so that the carbon monoxide is rendered innoxious. The above reaction is applied also to unburnt substances in the exhaust gas. Thus, it is enabled to obtain electric energy from noxious exhaust gas at a high efficiency of conversion.
