In this system for an internal combustion engine including an EGR passage connecting the exhaust passage of the engine with its suction passage and a suction passage side EGR valve and exhaust passage side EGR valve installed on the suction passage side and the exhaust passage side, respectively, of the EGR passage, the EGR gas confined in the EGR passage is released by opening the suction passage side EGR valve at such a timing that the release of the EGR gas is promoted by a pressure wave generated in the EGR passage after the exhaust passage side EGR valve is opened.
