To provide an exhaust gas recirculation device of an internal combustion engine which controls adhesion of a sediment to the inner wall of an exhaust recirculating pathway in a more desirable condition while controlling the adhesion appropriately.
The exhaust gas recirculation device has the exhaust gas recirculating pathway 41 for recirculating the exhaust gas discharged into an exhaust pathway 24 and an EGR valve 42 for adjusting the quantity of the exhaust air recirculation in the exhaust air recirculating pathway 41. The exhaust air is recirculated to an intake pathway 23 while controlling the EGR valve 42 based on the operation condition of the diesel engine 1. When the temperature of the exhaust air is lower than an emission quantity calculation threshold temperature (a first prescribed temperature) at which the sediment may adhere to the exhaust gas recirculating pathway 41, calculation of the gross HC emission quantity is started. When the gross HC emission quantity is at least a possible removal threshold emission quantity at which the sediment in a quantity larger than the quantity to be removed by the exhaust gas discharged under the normal operation condition of the diesel engine 1 may adhere to the inner wall of the exhaust gas recirculating pathway 41, the exhaust gas recirculated quantity is reduced/corrected.
