Abstract:

To provide an exhaust mechanism for lean burn engine, hindering a NOx peculiar reactant from exhausting into the atmosphere.

The exhaust mechanism 10 for a lean burn internal combustion engine comprises: a nitrogen oxide (NOx) absorbent 28; a catalyst 30 to apply a catalyst effect to a selective catalyst reduction (SCR) due to a NOx peculiar reactant of NOx; first means 18 and 22 for introducing the NOx peculiar reactant or its precursor into the exhaust gas existing upstream of the SCR catalyst 30; and a means 24 to control the introduction of the NOx peculiar reactant or its precursor into the exhaust gas fed via the first introducing means 18 and 22, wherein the SCR catalyst 30 is arranged upstream of the NOx absorbent 28 and along with the NOx absorbent if desired, while the control means 24 is arranged so as to introduce the NOx peculiar reactant or its precursor into the exhaust gas via the first introducing means 18 and 22, only when the SCR catalyst 30 is active.
