To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine capable of preventing overheat of an exhaust emission control catalyst.
This exhaust emission control device has first cylinders 1A, #1-#3 and second cylinders 1B, #4-#6. A first exhaust pipe 9A is connected to the first cylinders, and a second exhaust pipe 9B is connected to the second cylinders. An intermediate part of the first exhaust pipe and an intermediate part of the second exhaust pipe are mutually connected by a communicating tube 17. A downstream end of the first exhaust pipe and a downstream end of the second exhaust pipe are connected to one common exhaust pipe 10, the exhaust emission control catalyst 15 is arranged in the common exhaust pipe, and an exhaust turbine 13 of a supercharger is arranged in the first exhaust pipe on the downstream side of a part connected with the communicating tube. The device is provided with exhaust gas quantity control means 16A, 16B executing exhaust gas quantity control controlling quantity of exhaust gas flowing into the exhaust emission control catalyst from a downstream end of the first exhaust pipe through a first exhaust pipe to keep temperature of the exhaust emission control catalyst at target temperature and quantity of exhaust gas flowing into the exhaust emission control catalyst from a downstream end of the second exhaust pipe through the second exhaust pipe.
