To emit a flash by deciding a low luminance backlight scene.
A digital camera appropriately switches the sensitivity of photography on the basis of appropriate exposure calculated by a photography luminance and, when it is decided that a photography scene is a low luminance backlight scene, performs flash photography. The low luminance backlight scene is a photography scene where surrounding of a main subject is surrounded by a luminance over area and luminance under area on the outer side that is not decided to be a backlight scene in normal backlight determination. The digital camera compares the sensitivity of photography set on the basis of the appropriate exposure with a preset high sensitivity threshold value and, when the sensitivity of photography is not equal to the high sensitivity threshold value or lower, judges that the photography scene then is a low luminance backlight scene and turns on flash light emission determination.
