This external 1preparation for skin comprises at least one of pyrrolidonecarboxylic acid sterol ester of formula I [X is O, proline residue or an amino ester residue of formula II (R is H, methyl, isopropyl, 2- methylpropyl, 1-methylpropyl, hydroxymethyl, 1-hydroxyethyl, phenylmethyl or hydroxyphenyl); Y is cholesteryl, 7-hydroxy cholesteryl, β-cholestanyl, coprostanyl, lathosteryl, zymosteryl, zymostenyl, desmosteryl, brassicasteryl, etc.] and an N-pyrrolidinecarbonylamino acid sterol ester, is excellent in improvement in moisture retention of skin and is capable of preventing skin from being dried and betting chapped skin.
