To provide an apparatus which can perform semiautomatic and highly accurate blood vessel diameter measurement, and which is excellent in operability.
The center line of a retina blood vessel is extracted, the branching point/crossing point and end point (feature point, hereafter) of the blood vessel are detected, the blood vessel spreading in a net shape is divided by the feature point and turned to the set of line segments. A blood vessel diameter is considered to be roughly fixed between the crossing points/branching points, the blood vessel diameter is automatically measured at two or more parts in the normal direction for the respective line segments (blood vessel line segments, hereafter) formed by being divided, and calculated value based on them is defined as the blood vessel diameter (line segment blood vessel diameter, hereafter) of the blood vessel part. An operator can immediately obtain the line segment blood vessel diameter of the blood vessel line segment just by specifying the part of the measured blood vessel within an eye fundus photo image displayed on a screen with a pointing device such as a mouse.
