PURPOSE: To obtain a fabric conditioning composition which imparts softness and antistatic property to a fabric during laundering without adversely affecting the washing of the fabric by incorporating a complex of a tertiary amine and a specified polycarboxylic acid and the unreacted excess tertiary amine.

CONSTITUTION: This liquid fabric conditioning composition contains a complex obtained by allowing a tertiary amine of the formula (wherein R1 is methyl or the like; and R2 and R3 are each a 12-22C aliphatic group), e.g. methyldistearylamine or methyldi(hydrogenated beef tallow) amine, to react with a multifunctional carboxylic acid selected from citric acid, 21-54C dicarboxylic acids and tricarboxylic acids and the unreacted tertiary amine present in 0.2 time excess of the stoichiometric amount of the amine required to form the complex. When a washing composition prepared by adding an anionic detergent, an inorganic builder and water to the conditioning composition is added to a laundering liquid, softness is imparted during washing. Granules obtained by spraying the composition on porous base beads containing a tripolyphosphate is advantageously applied.
