To provide a facial image detector which improves the accuracy of detecting a facial image while suppressing an increase in an operation load.
The depth of field of a facial image imaging camera 12 is controlled, and an edge having features of an eyelid of a target person is determined on the basis of edge strength when the depth of field is controlled. The depth of field is an area that looks to come into focus, and it looks blurred outside the area. Therefore, for example, when an edge of glasses and an edge of an eyelid are extracted as candidates, either edge between them first comes out of the area where the edge is brought into focus when the depth of field is changed. The facial image detector 10 determines whether the edge has the features of the eyelid of the target person on the basis of a change in edge strength at that time. Consequently, the edge having the feature of the eyelid of the target person can be accurately extracted and the accuracy of detecting the eyelid can be raised.
