PURPOSE: To improve the operability by detecting the recording capacity of a recording medium of a reception side facsimile device and transmitting the recording capacity information to a transmission side facsimile device so as to prevent intermission during transmission/reception due to deficiency of recording capacity.

CONSTITUTION: An initial value is set and inputted to a detecting section 49 as an initial value of a counter every time a recording paper roll 46 is replaced with a new roll. The detection section 49 decrements the drive pulse number required for carriage from the said count value when the receiving is performed and the recording paper sheet 46a is carried. Moreover, the detecting section transmits the count value to a reception side transmission/reception control section 44. A transmission side transmission/reception control section 39 compares required recording paper length information obtained from the key input from an input section 40 with storage capacity information obtained from a control section 44 and when the recording paper 46a runs short of the recording of the original, after the transmission side transmission/reception control section 39 transmits a procedure intermission signal, the section 39 connects a telephone line to a telephone set 42, generates an operator call tone and also transmits a deficiency signal to a display section 41. The communication to the operator of the reception side to replace the recording paper roll is attained and a new recording paper roll 46 is loaded.
