Abstract:
PURPOSE: To perform accurate diagnosis with a variable influencing tank internal pressure limited to the fuel consumption, by performing a failure diagnosis at the time of cold starting.
CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a detecting means 16 at the time of cold starting in particular, a setting means 17, a valve apparatus 18, a pressure detecting means 19, and a judging means 20. Immediately after the cold starting of an internal combustion engine 10, evaporative fuel in a fuel tank 11 can hardly be formed, causing a variable, influencing tank internal pressure, to be only the fuel consumption. Since fuel is consumed after cold starting, when no leak is caused in a vapor passage 12, pressure, detected by the pressure detecting means 19, is surely changed once as far as to negative pressure, and then is increased with the rise of the fuel temperature. on the other hand, when leak is caused in the vapor passage 12, the pressure is hardly changed in the vicinity of air pressure. Consequently, the existence of leak in a passage, from the fuel tank 11 to the valve apparatus 18, can be surely detected, by finding the negative pressure, being a given value (e.g. -50mmAg) or less, of the pressure by the judging means 20 only at the time of cold starting.
