PURPOSE: To enhance an activity and density of activated carbon by heating and drying a mixture of lignocellulose and a specified chemical activator, pulverizing, reagglomerating and activating.
CONSTITUTION: Lignocellulose and a chemical activator selected from zinc chloride and phosphoric acid are mixed by solar ratio 1:1-1:3 at 35-90°C within one hour to produce a mixture. The mixture is heated, plasticized and, after being dryed until the water content of acid treated lignocellulose becomes ≤25 wt.%, is pulverized by a pin mixer to form fine particles. Subsequently the fine particles are agglomerated, molded and densified to obtain spheric high density carbon. This carbon is heated to 550°C to obtain activated carbon which possesses the butane removal capacity of 15-25 g/100 cm3, ≥50% the porosity, based on pore volume of 1.8-50 nm diameter, and the ≤20% porosity, based on pore volume of 50 nm diameter.
