Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an alloy possible to be amorphous and to obtain a metallurgical member in which fine graphite is formed in a metallic structure by annealing by adding a specified amt. of B to an Fe-C series alloy or an Fe-Si-C series alloy, executing melting and thereafter rapidly cooling it.
SOLUTION: The compsn. of an Fe series alloy is composed of, by weight, 2.0 to 7.0% C, 0.2 to 3.0% B and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Or, it is composed of 2.0 to 7.0% C, 0.2 to 3.0% B, 1.0 to 2.5% Si and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. The either of them is a high carbon-contg. iron series alloy compsn. contg. an eutectic compsn. and in the case that rapid cooling is executed from a melted state at a rate capable of making it amorphous, by the addition of B, in the case of a hypo-eutectic compsn. in which the content of C is smaller than the case of the eutectic compsn., the precipitation of primary crystal austenite is checked. In the case of a hyper-eutectic compsn. in which the content of C is large, the precipitation of graphite is checked, it is solidified as it is and the whole body or a part thereof of the surface layer is made amorphous to exhibit high strength.
