Abstract:
PURPOSE: To make an exciting coil of a coaxial engine starting device more compact.
CONSTITUTION: An engine starting device has a pinion 6 for driving a ring gear which is joined with a spline to an output shaft 4 driven by an electric motor 3, a switch 7 for opening and closing an electric power supply circuit to the electric motor, and an electromagnetic device 9 comprising a cylindrical armature and an exciting coil surrounding the output shaft so as to drive the pinion and the movable contact plate 8 of the switch in an axial direction, and the spline means is made a helical spline 19 and the switch can be closed independently of the movement of the pinion. Therefore when the electric motor starts rotating, an axial force by the helical spline is added to the pinion, thereby eliminating the need for placing a large current on the exciting coil at the initial stage of starting.
