PURPOSE: To cut a mat for a lead-acid battery to a uniform length by a procedure in which a position detector is provided at a position corresponding to a given length from the point at which the mat is cut off and the mat is cut off when it reached the position.
CONSTITUTION: The mat 1 of glass woven cloth, synthetic resin net, etc., is gradually delivered downwards by the mat delivery rollers 2 and 2'. When the mat 1 reached a point apart by a given distance from the cutter 3, at which a position detector is provided, the mat delivery rollers 2 and 2' are stopped and then the mat is cut off by the cutter 3. The position detector has the light emitter 4 and the light receiver 5, for example, having a function in which the light receiver 5 receives light from the light emitter 4 at all times, but when the mat 1 passed through a line connecting the light emitter 4 with the light receiver 5, no light enters the light receiver 5.
