Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain an improved fiber amplifier and a telecommunication system using it by making the diameter of mode field in a part of a first coupler fiber to be smaller than that of a second coupler and fusing it along a part of length of the fiber. CONSTITUTION: This fiber coupler comprises wavelength splitting pultiplexer coupler 20, formed of two different optical fibers 21 and 13'. The fiber 13' is formed of an optical fiber, whose mode field diameter is the same as that of a telecommunication fiber 14', and the fiber 21 is formed of an optical fiber whose mode field diameter is the same as that of a gain fiber 10'. These fibers are concocted with each other through a fusing splice 22. In a fiber amplifier system in which the mode field diameter of the gain fiber is sufficiently small, a ratio between the mode field diameters of fibers 13' and 21 is normally 5 to 1. In addition, pump power is applied to a part of gain fiber in which no optical signal is conveyed.
